カッパ伝説をまとめてみました

長浜親水広場にカッパの石像が登場したので、カッパ伝説をまとめてみました。

訪れる観光客用にGoogle map に投稿してみたのですが、うまく閲覧できるか試験中です。

カッパと一緒に祈ろう、みんなの幸せ

…カッパ ”河口湖の水神”

鬼や天狗と並び、日本人が好んで空想した妖怪カッパ。 世界文化遺産の河口湖地域にはカッバ伝説が残っています。 湖畔では打ち身や切り傷に効く膏薬「カッパ膏」なるものが数十年前まで存在していました。カッパは湖水を清らかにし、願いを叶えてくれるという宝玉「摩尼（数珠）」を持っています。カッパと一緒に祈れば、あなたの健康や願いが叶うかも。

 

伊藤堅古氏が記した「河口湖周辺の伝説と民俗（1958年）」の中にカッパにまつわる伝承が紹介されています。 その昔、同町長浜地区の湖岸に近い家では、湖で捕れた小魚を竹串に刺し囲炉裏の周りで保存食にしていました。村の元庄屋の家では夜中に魚が盗まれるので、家人が注意していると、ある晩、濡れた黒い生き物がうごめいていました。近づいてみると、黒い生き物は湖の方へ逃げ去ってしまいましたが、和紙に筆書きされたカッパの膏薬の処方箋が落ちていました。試しに作ってみると、深手の切り傷もすぐに治ってしまいました。この話が評判となり昭和初期まで湖畔の名薬として知られていました。

一方で、恐ろしい言い伝えもあります。いたずらカッパがよく湖岸に落ちている十銭玉に化けていて、拾おうとすると湖の深くまで引き込まれ、溺れてしまうという。河口湖では昔か水難事故はカッパの災いだと言われてきました。

 

古来より湖水の恩恵にあずかりつつ、湖に対する恐れも抱きながら向き合っていた生活の中から、カッパという水神が生まれたのではないかと云われています。

 

地元ではカッパ伝説をもとに「かっぱめし」という名物料理があります。カッパの大好きなキュウリと、長芋のすりおろしを炊きたてのご飯の上にのせマグロや焼肉などが盛り付けられたりする丼です。

"Let’s Pray with the Kappa for Joy and Well-being"

Kappa, the Water Deity of Lake Kawaguchi

Alongside oni (demons) and tengu (goblin-like creatures), the kappa is one of Japan’s most beloved and widely imagined mythical creatures. In the Lake Kawaguchi area, which is part of a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, legends of the kappa remain.

On the lakeshore, there once existed a folk remedy called Kappa Kō—a salve believed to heal bruises and cuts—that was in use until just a few decades ago. It is said that the kappa possesses a magical jewel called a mani (a prayer bead), which purifies the waters of the lake, and grants wishes. If you pray together with the kappa, your health and wishes may come true.

A kappa legend is introduced in “Legends and Folklore of the Lake Kawaguchi Area (1958), written by Kenko Ito”.  Long ago, in a home near the lakeshore in the Nagahama area of the town, small fish caught in the lake were skewered on bamboo sticks and preserved around the hearth. At the house of the former village headman, fish kept disappearing late at night. One night, a family member kept watch and saw a wet, black creature wriggling around. When he approached, the black creature fled toward the lake, but left behind a handwritten prescription for a kappa salve written on traditional Japanese paper. When he tried making it, even deep cuts healed quickly. This story became popular, and until the early Showa era (1926-1989), it was known as a famous medicine by the lakeside.

On the other hand, there is also a frightening legend. It is said that a mischievous kappa often disguises itself as a ten-sen coin that has fallen on the lakeshore, and when one tries to pick it up, he or she is pulled deep into the lake and drowns. In the past, it has long been said that water accidents are caused by kappa.

It is believed that the kappa, as a water deity, was born from the lives of people who both benefited from and feared the lake.

Inspired by this local legend, the area now features a specialty dish called Kappa-meshi (“Kappa Rice Bowl”). It includes the kappa’s favorite food—cucumber—along with grated yam placed on freshly cooked rice and is topped with ingredients such as tuna or grilled meat.
